Dr. Berman graduated with a B.S. in Biology from Cornell University in 2001. She then moved to Yale University to pursue her Ph.D. studies in the lab of Dr. Tom Steitz. She conducted her postdoctoral research as a Jane Coffin Childs Memorial Fund fellow at CU Boulder in the lab of Dr. Tom Cech. In 2012, she established her lab in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh where she is an Associate Professor.
